Why should I record my story?

It’s your life. It’s your legacy. It is important.

Many people think they need to have achieved something exceptional, or be famous to be able to write your story and create an interesting testimony. But that’s not true at all!

Because the people you are writing to are your loved ones and your descendants, and they care for you as much as you care for them. That’s why they want to know more about you. But it’s not always easy to ask. And it’s not always easy for you as a parent or a grandparent to open up yourself, and tell what is at the bottom of your heart. This is your chance! By writing the stories which have made your life, you can address a message which will explain and reveal who you truly are.

Consider also all the hard earned experience you have gathered during your existence. Shouldn’t this knowledge remain to benefit your heirs? You know every member of your family, with their strengths but also weaknesses. By writing your story, you can highlight some parts for them from which they can draw inspiration. The story of your life is a true, authentic and unvarnished life book you write for them. You can show some parts to your most intimate persons and engage a discussion about the values you want to transmit.

As the old saying goes “When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.” By writing the story of your life, you will also create a place where your loved ones can have an inner discussion with you, once you will no longer be there.

The story of your life that you write will remain for future generations of your family as a testimony of what you have achieved in your life, which hurdles you had to pass, and which values were your beacon. No one is in a better position to select the most meaningful elements and sort out what was important from what was not. You will not be forgotten.

It is also a gift you leave for future generations. Once written, your message will remain for generations to come and become a family asset. Your descendants will know where they come from, and the reasons why the family has taken certain turns. A study from Emory University found that children benefit if they know about their relatives. Psychologists Robyn Fivush and Marshall Duke concluded that "Family stories provide a sense of identity through time, and help children understand who they are in the world".
